Wood River Team Goes Above and Beyond for Neighbors in Need
The Wood River, Illinois, Team pulled together to create and present a Thanksgiving basket to a local family in need… but that donation was just the beginning of the team’s work to give back and ease the burden for these members of their community.
“We as a store are a family,” Beth Holcomb from the Wood River Store, said. “And Patty Williams (RGM), Adam Roberts, Bevy Wallace, Dan Millitello and myself, Beth Holcomb, came together as a family to pitch in and make this happen.”
It all started when the team decided that they wanted to put together a special Thanksgiving basket for a family Adam had known in high school, after one member of the family reached out to Adam about a job at Pizza Hut and talked to Adam about how rough they were having it lately. Adam made his case to the team, and everyone agreed – a family with three kids 9 and under should not suffer like they were, especially not during the holidays.
The team donated enough food and goodies to fill two baskets and numerous bags for this family, and set a time to deliver the basket.
“This was a very emotional time,” Beth said. “We go in and talk and quickly find out that they are worse off than we really knew. They didn’t even have a fridge to put the groceries in.”
The family had fallen on very hard times, and there was no furniture in the house, hardly any clothes, and few personal products for anyone.
“I fight back the tears as I am now typing this story – I have a son and Adam has three babies, too,” Beth said.
The family’s hardship hit close to home, and the Wood River Team was inspired to get to work. The Thanksgiving basket delivery took place on November 19, and by the end of the month, the team had collected so much more than a meal!
“The first thing that happened after the basket delivery was that Adam went out and got the family a fridge,” Beth said. “We have made it our personal mission to get this family the things every family needs and should have!”
To date, the team has delivered more than nine loads of essentials, and they are not done yet!
“We want to have them set up for Christmas with a tree, stockings and all,” Beth said. “This has been a wonderful experience to see who out there in this community and our family will dig deep into their pockets and donate to a loving, amazing and very thankful family!”
