Hurricane Heroes
In the aftermath of hurricanes Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, NPC employees across the country mobilized to send care packages to members of the NPC Family who were impacted. Additionally, our NPC Family came to the aid of employees through the NPC International Disaster Relief Fund, and thanks to quick action, were able to get money to victims within days! The teams on the ground in these areas also got to work. Though some employees had no water or power at home, they were in their restaurants working to provide meals to first responders or serve their communities. We are inspired by all of NPC’s Hurricane Heroes! Here are some of their stories:
Store 2986 in Live Oak, Florida, was hit hard during Hurricane Irma. While the store closed early in preparation, before they shut down, RGM Miranda and her team wanted to make sure that first responders were well taken care of. The team made some pizzas and took them to the Sheriff’s Department to show their support and appreciation.
When Jessica Selph, Senior Shift Manager from Store 4602, realized linemen working to restore power after Hurricane Irma were having issues getting food, her selfless service led to the donation of 40 pizzas.
Jessica, met her AGM Brian Hall at Store 4675, the only store in the Area with power, to help make the pizzas prior to open. Jessica then took it upon herself to drive these out to the men in the field working – she also did this knowing she’d have to wait in 3 to 4 hour gas lines to refill her vehicle!
Shameka Hillsman lost everything due to the flooding caused by Hurricane Irma. She and her three daughters had to evacuate their home in the middle of the night as water rushed in, and although they got out safely, they left with little more than the clothes on their backs.
The day they got back into the store, Area Manager Larry Morgan learned about Shameka’s experience and immediately called her to tell her about the NPC Disaster Relief Fund. Neither Larry nor Shameka could have imagined the response from the NPC family!
Just two days later, Facilities Manager Fred Kaumeyer drove to Jacksonville from Atlanta, along with his daughter, to present Shameka and her family with a personal care package! That same week, Shameka also received a relief check from the NPC Disaster Relief Fund to help her get back on her feet.
Talk about Taking Pride… Store 2265 was one of only two businesses in Naples with power the day after Hurricane Irma made landfall. RGM Dealia Geffard called RMT Jamie Douglass Monday morning and said, “We have power, can I open?”
Not only did she open, but she had two huge days serving the needs of her community – working with carryout only, limited menu, limited staff and no gas to be found for employees to get to work. RGM Sandy Corbett from Store 2269 was by her side the whole way.
On Thursday, President Trump and Vice President Pence toured the Naples Area and stopped just behind Store 2265 to hand out food and talk with residents. AGM Deeanne Marretta helped hand out food with Vice President Pence and he thanked this amazing team for being there to service the needs of the community.
Later on Thursday, the store received a massive order for Collier County Emergency Management, and once again, the store did not miss a beat.
This dream team truly triumphed in the face of adversity – serving hot, delicious food to a community ravaged by a hurricane. We are SO PROUD of these guys and the leadership they displayed during such a difficult time!
Andrea McCoy had been living in a shelter in Dallas, Texas, for the three weeks following Hurricane Harvey when AGM Kelly King and her team sponsored Andrea and her family. (Look at the size of those boxes!!!) HR Director Rachel Berry reached out to her son who used to live in Dallas for help finding someone who could deliver the care packages to Andrea. This was the Gibbs Family. NPC shipped everything to the Gibbs Family and they took it down to the KB Hutchinson Convention Center-Harvey Shelter to deliver the donations and NPC relief check in person.
Thank you to Kelly and her team who sponsored multiple families impacted by Harvey. We are also very grateful for the kindness of strangers who helped us deliver the blessings in boxes to Andrea. She is walking a very difficult path right now, but we hope she and her family will be able to return to the Port Arthur, Texas, area soon and back to her NPC Family.
What do you do when the National Guard calls and says their 253rd Transportation Company is not going to make it home in time from Hurricane Irma relief and needs help getting their troops fed?
You say, “What do you like on your pizza?”
Great job to Area Manager Ricki McMillian and the team at the Hope Mills, North Carolina, Pizza Hut – RGM Jeni Reed, Tee, Josh, Curtis and Sha – for #servingthosewhoserve!
Though Store 2998 closed to allow for evacuations and Hurricane Irma Prep, Sheila and Julie took time on Sunday to make sure that Taylor County’s Emergency Command Center Team was going to be fed. This selfless act fills us with such pride! Great job going above and beyond to take care of our First Responders!
Store 2255 opened its doors to the community just two days after Hurricane Irma! Special thanks to Carlos, Don, Deanna, Faith and Robbie who came from their home store to help. Faith and Robbie have no power and water at their own homes but came in to help and serve a community in need. Now that’s Super Supreme!
Valerie Troxell and her team, Maciel Luna, Christina Jines, Trinity Myers and Maggie Holder, as well as Susan Long and Will Gardner, RGMs from other stores in the Charlotte area, put their own hurricane recovery aside so the people of Punta Gorda could enjoy some respite after going through the eye of Hurricane Irma. Valerie endured Hurricane Charley 13 years ago and knows the importance of the first hot meal and community gathering!
On September 26, 50% of sales from our restaurants in Florida were donated to Hurricane Irma relief. In just one day, these stores raised an unbelievable $149,198 for the United Way of Florida! That is certainly an NPC record! The Florida franchisees as a whole raised more than $323,000!
Both individuals and entire departments “adopted” families that were impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Their thoughtfulness and generosity has helped members of the NPC Family start the recovery process – and our work is not done yet! We are still receiving requests for recovery funds.
